The Canadian Association of Thoracic Surgeons met in London, Ontario this past September. A big thank you goes to the 2 Richards, Drs. R. Malthaner and R. Inculet for all their help with the local planning. Dr. Malthaner planned an excellent postgraduate course on Thoracic Ultrasound that was well attended. The remainder of the afternoon was the CATS Research Meeting steered by Dr. AJ Seely. Under his guidance, this committee has grown and for the first year CATS sponsored the research coordinators to attend and hold their own meeting.

We had 2 very formable sessions on New Technology and Controversies in Thoracic Surgery.  Our guest lecturer for the Pearson Lecturer was Dr. Thomas D’Amico from Duke University.  He gave an excellent lecture entitled “Thorascopic Lobectomy: Management of Locally Advanced Lung Cancer”, as well as the “Process of Educating How to do VATS Lobectomy”.  This year’s winner of the Robert J. Ginsberg Resident Research Award was given to Dr. L. Lee from McGill University, Montreal for his work entitled “Estimating the risk of prolonged air leak after pulmonary resection using  a simple scoring system.”

I wish to thank all the attendees that made the meeting a huge success. In the upcoming year we will be organizing the next CATS meeting which will be held in Calgary, Alberta September 13-15, 2012.  We hope to have a program out soon but in the interim please save the date as we look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting.

Cheers,
Your President
Donna Maziak
